About
A non-profit building a digital commons to detect wildfires.
Our story
Pyronear was born in March 2020, when volunteer engineers and data scientists met during a Data for Good season. They were convinced that artificial intelligence could help firefighters spot fire starts before they get out of control.
Faced with expensive proprietary solutions that small fire services cannot afford, they chose to build a digital commons: open-source early detection, frugal in energy and cost, co-built with firefighters.
Our mission
To democratize frugal, open and collaborative technologies for fighting wildfires, for the benefit of ecosystems and citizens. In practice:
- Detect fire starts as early as possible, so a quick response limits burned areas, emissions and biodiversity loss.
- Make this technology affordable for every fire and rescue service, including small rural ones.
- Share open knowledge: code, models, datasets and field feedback.
- Bring together volunteers, researchers and firefighters around a commons that helps regions adapt to climate change.
A community
More than 150 volunteers have contributed since 2020: data scientists, developers, designers and firefighters. About fifteen regular contributors, student projects with engineering schools, hackathons and skills sponsorship keep Pyronear moving all year round.

Our values
Early detection
To fight effectively against wildfires, it is important to detect them early in order to allow a quick intervention of fire and rescue services and thus limit their impact.
Open data
With the help of our partners and volunteers, we are building a dataset that we are sharing as Open Data, so that the images collected and annotated can be used by as many people as possible.
Economic
Our R&D is done by volunteers, our device is sober and the non-profit object of our association, which allows us to propose very competitive prices to facilitate a deployment on the territory.
Energetically sober
We are in a so-called low-tech approach, we have built a low-consumption device allowing an easier deployment and a more reasoned use of our precious resources.
Performance
Our AI experts actively follow the news in this fast-moving field in order to make Pyronear benefit from its latest advances.
Automatic
We offer a fully automated solution to free up firefighters' time.
Modular
We offer a complete detection pipeline but our system has been designed to work with existing equipment (use of cameras already in place, connection with existing software ...)
